History,

In 1398 the port Swarte Sluys was first mentioned. Zwartsluis has been transit port for peat from Drenthe towards Holland. Nowadays, the port is mainly used by recreationists and one finds employment in shipbuilding.
Between 1765 and 1798, Zwartsluis was the place where many Jewish families from a wide radius had their newborn boys circumcised. In the surviving circumcision register, place names such as Dwingeloo, Lemmer, Kampen and Blokzijl can be found.
